Case study
Tribuna de Petrópolis
A scalable environment for a newspaper with more than a century of history in Rio de Janeiro's mountain region.
About the client
News website
Tribuna de Petrópolis was founded on October 9, 1902, amid a political dispute over which city would be the capital of the state of Rio de Janeiro. That's 117 years in business, through many economic and financial cycles.
A pioneer, the newspaper built a brand that combines investment in technology and innovation with local coverage of Rio de Janeiro's mountain region, along with national and international correspondents.
The Tribuna de Petrópolis Group includes a newspaper, a radio station and a printing press, and its challenge is to stay relevant in a globalized market. Technology became a major obstacle for print media, and digital audiences expect publishers to keep up with innovation, so adapting solutions to readers is essential.
The news website launched in 1998 and the social media page in 2010. AWS came on board as a strategic partner, with modern technology that fits the newspaper's pioneering profile. With Amazon, the goals are to keep the work going, steadily expand results and achieve cost-effective improvements.
The challenge
Build a new structure and an environment that scales as needed.
The Tribuna de Petrópolis website gets a lot of daily traffic, and the previous infrastructure had several problems. The main one was a lack of scalability to keep up with the volume of visits: during traffic peaks, the site slowed down because the infrastructure couldn't handle the demand.
The goal was to solve these problems to deliver the best possible experience to readers.
The solution
Exclusivity, innovation and security
The solution chosen was Amazon Web Services (AWS), a highly available, scalable, secure and cost-effective service.
With scalable, highly available services, the goal was to solve the site's performance and latency problems.
AWS services used
Results
An environment tailored to its needs
The new Tribuna de Petrópolis environment was built with these AWS services:
- AWS Elastic Beanstalk: makes it easy to deploy and scale web applications built with Java, .NET, PHP, Node.js, Python, Ruby, Go and Docker, on servers such as Apache, Nginx, Passenger and IIS.
- Amazon Aurora Serverless: a MySQL- and PostgreSQL-compatible relational database with automatic management of memory, CPU and storage, which reduces latency and downtime during high-traffic periods.
- Amazon S3 (Simple Storage Service): highly available, durable and scalable storage, with immediate access to data at low cost, for any type of file.
- Amazon SES (Simple Email Service): a reliable, cost-effective cloud email service for staying in touch with readers and customers.
- AWS CodePipeline: a continuous delivery service that automates the build, test and deployment stages every time the code changes. It integrates with third-party services such as GitHub and charges only for what you use, with no upfront costs or long-term commitments.
- Other services: Elastic Load Balancing, AWS Systems Manager and Amazon GuardDuty.
