Smart city solutions
Upcities Govtech has worked with public sector clients for 12 years and offers its own platform, Upcities, a smart city solution.
The platform provides online services such as vaccination and medical appointment scheduling, consumer protection services (Procon, Brazil's consumer protection agency) and integrations with the legacy systems of government agencies and public authorities.
The challenge
Build a new structure and an environment that scales as needed.
Upcities Govtech faced scalability and availability challenges in its infrastructure, because the Upcities solution handles large volumes of data and needs flexible compute resources.
With every new client that went live, Upcities had to meet the scalability needs of smart cities and, to do so, provision resources quickly whenever needed.
The solution
Modernize the infrastructure to scale operations
The solutions architect teams at KXC, an AWS partner, and Upcities Govtech kicked off a joint project to modernize the IT infrastructure and optimize operations by migrating to the AWS Cloud.
For a scalable, robust infrastructure, the following AWS services were recommended: Amazon Aurora Serverless, Amazon EKS (Elastic Kubernetes Service), AWS WAF and Amazon GuardDuty.
Aurora Serverless eliminated the need to manage database capacity. It automatically adjusts compute capacity and storage to real-time demand, ensuring the resources needed to process and store the cities' data.
Amazon EKS orchestrates and manages containers in a scalable, efficient way. With it, the company deploys and manages its containerized applications in a highly available, resilient environment and provisions resources quickly when needed, meeting the scalability needs of smart cities.
To protect the applications and the cities' sensitive data, AWS WAF and Amazon GuardDuty were implemented:
- AWS WAF (Web Application Firewall): protection against common attacks, such as SQL injection and cross-site scripting, with the option to create custom security rules.
- Amazon GuardDuty: a threat detection service that monitors and analyzes network traffic and activity logs, identifies malicious activity and sends real-time alerts.

A highly available, secure and scalable environment
With a well-designed architecture and AWS infrastructure, KXC met the goals of the Upcities Govtech project. The company was able to scale its growth, gained market recognition and authority, and remained a leader in smart cities.
With the project in place, Upcities Govtech saw a 300% increase in its client base.
