Case study
Videosoft
A phased move from on-premises to AWS, with containers and a serverless database for more than 25,000 kiosks.
About the client
Self-service solutions
With more than 25 years in business, Videosoft specializes in self-service, working both in software development and in manufacturing and maintaining more than 25,000 self-service kiosks across Brazil.
To keep pace with market growth, it needed to move from on-premises to the cloud as a way to meet high demand efficiently, flexibly and with high availability.
The challenge
Build a new structure and an environment that scales as needed.
Videosoft faced scalability and availability challenges in its infrastructure.
At peak times, processes such as updating the menus of a large restaurant chain could take up to 25 minutes. The company also suffered periods of downtime caused by its on-premises infrastructure.
The need to scale efficiently and elastically, and to guarantee high availability for its customers, led Videosoft to look for cloud infrastructure.
The solution
Modernize the infrastructure to scale operations
The project was based on a gradual migration of the existing on-premises infrastructure combined with modernizing the architecture.
The first service used in the new architecture was Amazon Aurora Serverless. It was chosen to provide flexible database scaling at peak times and during compute-intensive processes that can run at different times of day.
Videosoft's application services shared the same instance in its on-premises infrastructure, which made it impossible to scale services independently. To enable that scaling and give the applications isolated environments, the workloads were migrated to ECS Fargate.
The applications were containerized and added as separate services in an ECS cluster. That made it possible to create minimal environments for each application and define horizontal Auto Scaling policies for each service. An Application Load Balancer distributes traffic across each service's containers.
A shared session mechanism that the containers of a single service could reach externally was also needed. For that, the team used ElastiCache for Redis in cluster mode, a managed in-memory database service that can serve as a session cache for the services on ECS.
To provide a shared file system the ECS services could access, the team used Elastic File System, which offers a highly available file system with elastic throughput.
To secure the solution and block illegitimate access to the applications, rate-limiting and geo-blocking rules were created in AWS WAF, attached to the Application Load Balancer.

Results
A highly available, secure and scalable environment
Today, Videosoft runs its entire environment in the cloud.
The new architecture's high availability eliminated the downtime incidents previously caused by the on-premises infrastructure. Elasticity and scalability cut the menu update process at peak times from 25 minutes to 2 minutes.
Close collaboration between the Videosoft and KXC teams made it possible to reach these results efficiently and gradually throughout the migration.
